Side to Side #AutismPositivity2015

By Erin Zerba

Side to Side

I sit here with my eyes closed, unable to speak.

I wrap my arms around myself and rock.

Side to side, I rock, like I used to do to soothe my children when they were small.

Side to side, I rock, trying to soothe myself.

Side to side, I rock, trying not to cry.

Side to side, I rock, trying to envision a warm, comfortable place.

Side to side, I rock, missing the strong arms that once made me feel safe.

Side to side, I rock, my arms wrapped around me are not enough, the tears are coming anyway.

I stop the rocking; I can’t hold it in anymore.

I cover my face, I am falling apart, but no one notices it.

My arms feel heavy, my body is shutting down.

It is just too much, too much emotional, mental, physical, and sensory stress.

My son often asks me, “How do you do all that you do?”

I tell him I don’t know, I just keep going, because I have to.

I just keep moving forward reminding myself that tomorrow is a new day.

Tomorrow I can try again.

Tomorrow … it will be better.

There will be a tomorrow when I will have strong arms wrapped around me again to help me feel safe.

Not the same strong arms of the past, but better arms attached to someone different.

There will be a tomorrow when I can come home and not cry from overload and lack of “spoons”.

I will not have so many jobs or homework to worry about.

But, those tomorrows aren’t here yet.

So, I will sit here with my eyes closed, unable to speak.

I wrap my arms around myself again and rock.

Side to side, I rock, to soothe myself.

“The Sun and the Moon” – Expressions of PosAutivity: #AutismPositivity2014

By Erin and her Daughter

My 13 year old daughter wanted to share a second poem for the Autism Positivity Flashblog 2014 – Expressions of PosAutivity. You can find her other poem here, “Down by the Riverside.”

My daughter loves to write poetry and songs as well as draw. She uses art to communicate and express herself. She is also very interested in Science. She wants to go into the field of Environmental Science when she grows up.

The kids and I are also very interested in Astronomy and love laying out in the yard in the summer time just looking up at the night sky. We look for constellations and tell stories about the myths behind them. We also look for satellites, observe the Moon, and watch meteor showers. A few weeks ago, we were watching the first episode of Cosmos with Neil deGrasse Tyson. Cosmos is an amazing show and after we watched the episode my daughter proceeded to write this poem.

The Sun and the Moon

By: H

The Sun in day

The Moon in night

We look up at them and wonder

They are different but connected,

In an odd way.

The whole universe is connected in an odd way,

But we don’t understand.

Specifically the Sun is a star of gases

And the Moon is part of the Earth

That was blasted off by collision.

“What I Love” – Expressions of PosAutivity: #AutismPositivity2014

My son, who is 11 years old, wanted to post photographs of his book shelf (top picture) and the living room book shelf (bottom picture) for the 2014 Autism Positivity Flashblog. My son has a passion for reading. He loves to read and you will often find him with a book in his hand. He would have many more books if we could afford them, but he is more than willing to check the books out at the library.

Now, you might suggest getting him a Kindle or some other e-reader, but my son prefers handling a physical book. He likes the feel and smell of books. It is a whole sensory experience for him. Also, he has trouble reading electronic screens. It causes him pain.

My son prefers the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and mystery, but has also enjoyed reading a nonfiction book here and there.

A Poem By My Daughter – Expressions of PosAutivity: #AutismPositivity2014

By Erin and her Daughter

This poem was written by my 13 year old daughter and she wanted to share it for the Autism Positivity Flashblog 2014 – Expressions of PosAutivity. “Water and Waves” is my daughter’s comfort thought. She pictures water and waves in her mind when she is stressed and anxious. Thinking “Water and Waves” helps my daughter focus when her thoughts are all jumbled. My daughter communicates and expresses herself through poems, songs, and pictures. She is an amazingly creative person.

Down by the Riverside

Where the green grass grows

Where the animals graze

Where the kids play

Where the water flows

Where the fish swim

Where the green algae grows
